Bleeding Heart: 5-10-12

Bleeding Heart

Leona Lewis

Pivotal Song Quote

My heart's crippled by the vein
That I keep on closing
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding

Time In My Life

I have no clue when I first heard this song, but it was definitely in college. I always remember having it shuffle through a playlist during a work out and feeling awkward for a second... wondering what people would think if they knew I was listening to this during the work out!

My Take:

Pain is nothing more than a perception our body creates to help us deal with an unfavorable situation...

A word, a phrase, a sentence... they can cut just as deep and be just as damaging as any blade piercing our skin could ever be...

Sticks and stones may break my bones and your words can simply crush me....

Your So Vain: 5-9-12

You're so Vain

Carly Simon

Pivotal Song Quote

But you gave away the things you loved

and

one of them was me

Time In My Life

This was my parents favorite song.  I grew up listening to this non-stop on long long road trips from Pennsylvania to Ocean City Marayland. I always found the cover picture of Carly Simon very "attractive" as I started to "develop." haha!

My Take:

Vanity is a crutch that either very insecure or very stupid people use to mask their flaws. There will always be someone stronger, smarter, more attractive, faster, richer, and funnier than you... but there will never be someone more genuine and personable than you can be. That is a decision you make in every encounter you experieince. Looks get you in the door... your personality keeps you there.

Fast Car: 5-8-12

Fast Car

Tracy Chapman

Pivotal Song Quote

Starting from Zero Got Nothing to Lose

Time In My Life

This was a random find. I was looking for Tracy Chapman's version of Give me One Reason when I stumbled across this. The opening melody hooked me from the get go and I love the lyrics.

My Take:

Everyone has crosses they have to bear throughout their life. Unfortunately, some are larger and heavier than others but thats just the way it is. They are created through the poor decisions we make or the result of bad luck. The key to overcoming these challenges is accepting the weight, working through it and having someone to help share the load.

Black: 5-7-12

Black

Pearl Jam

Pivotal Song Quote

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, can't it be mine

Time In My Life

This gem was my college romantic tragedy theme song. The part about the 'star in someone else's sky' always made me miss those stupid little things that we shared and only we could appreciate.

My Take:

When you fall madly in love with someone you come to appreciate the silliest little quirks and ticks that make them, and in turn, your relationship one of a kind. When this bond is stripped from you, a piece of your essence is also stolen away leaving your world changed...altered...different. Knowing that someone else now gets to stake claim and enjoy the idiosyncrasies you once adored, is simply heart wrenching.   Take heart though, learning a new someone's quircks will be just as endearing, so embrace it.

Coming Back to Life: 5-6-12

Coming Back to Life

David Gilmore

Pivotal Song Quote

Where were you when I was hurst and helpless?

 Time In My Life

I was first introduced to what Pink Floyd was and how it was like to truly enjoy their music. This song helped me appreciate the relationships that help me grow... good and bad.

My Take:

Reflecting on a past relationshipcan do one of two things: It can help you realize that the person you calledyours simply didn't appreciate being yours and wasn't there in the time of yourneed, when you were bent and broken. Or, it can reveal to you that you wereindeed the romantic villain who orchestrated the demise of the thing you calledlove. Either way, this reflection should result in learning, letting go andmoving on, so when that the next great chance you are graced with to become apart of another's heart, you can claim it.

With a Little Help From My Friends: 5-5-12

With a Little Help From My Friends

Joe Cocker

Pivotal Song Quote

Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song
And I'll try not to sing out of key.

Time In My Life

Who doesn't remember the "Wonder Years" TV show and its theme song!? This song makes me remember every muggy summer evening in grade school back in Western Pennsylvania when I would high tail it home at dusk to watch Fred Savage's life play out as Daniel Stern narrated his life. I always enjoy hearing it because it was a time when life was simple and having fun was free!

My Take:

True friends aren't a commodity that are traded on the New York City Stock Exchange. They aren't haggled over or bargained for. They aren't found at the bottom of the ocean in a treasure chest or on a deserted island buried under a gigantic X.
True friends are a wealth worth far more than dollars or cents. They offer the advice you don't want to hear but know you need to. And of course they can get you by with a joke and even higher high with a toke when you need it.

Rootless Tree: 5-4-12

Rootless Tree

Damien Rice

Pivotal Song Quote

What I want from this
Is to learn to let go
No not of you
Of all that's been told

Time In My Life

This song frequented my playlist during a rather messy break up. At the time it fit perfectly and I wished I could relay the message... but I am glad I didn't. The smiles are worth more than the pain to me now!

My Take:

Personally, I feel like this song is a great representation of how one feels after having their heart broken by the person who helped make it whole. The stain that one leaves on the heart of another is quite possibly the most powerful force known to man... or woman. This stain is not easily washed away and sometimes never is. But the new relationships we forge and and memories we create help paint over it and erase the majority of the pain. One should never forget but needs to learn to let go.  As a "Rootless Tree" can never stand alone, and a broken heart can never beat on its own.
